Larimar - Semiprecious Gemstones
by: Anirban
One of the newest known semiprecious gemstone, the Larimar dates back to 1974 when a flash of blue in a beach in the coastal province of Barahona caught the attention of Miguel Mendez. Miguel found it to be an attractive blue stone that has never been seen earlier and named it after her daughter LARIssa and the sea (MAR) to form Larimar.

A thorough search was performed to find out the origin of the stone, which led to a discovery of a small mine in the Los Chupaderos, the only source of Larimar in the world.

The origin of Larimar is a complex volcano in the Dominican Republic where minerals crystallized to form pectolite within the cavities. This volcano is the only source of Larimar in the world and its excavation forces miners to dig down deeper and deeper into the volcano.

Larimar, or blue pectolite, is a stone that Dominicans believe to have unexplained metaphysical properties. The blue color of Larimar resembles the sea, which also gives the freedom from self-imposed limitations and a sense of peace in finding truth. Larimar is associated with the fifth chakra of the human body and has the ability to enhance communication in general. This special feature makes Larimar highly appreciated in necklaces.
